Harvey Norman Singapore launches GST Free online store

Harvey Norman Singapore & Australia has started selling computer games on a website based overseas to let Australian consumers avoid GST. The company’s founder and chairman, Gerry Harvey, who has been critical of the rise of international online shopping, told Fairfax he launched the website based in Ireland reluctantly.

“We are not doing this with a great deal of joy. We have been able to do this for a long time, we have held off,” Mr Harvey said. “But you get to a point where you can’t hold off.”

Mr Harvey said the GST-free shipments were legal, although he had not discussed the matter with the tax office.
